A holistic nutritionist is a dietician who helps people use their own capacity for self-healing. For this reason, a natural foods diet is very important in holistic healing and nutrition.
Holistic nutritionists differ from registered dieticians (RD’s) in several ways. Every practitioner has his or her own style and emphasis, but the primary distinction between an RD and a holistic nutritionist is the type of schooling required.
What is a Registered Dietician?
A dietitian has to complete a minimum of a Bachelors of Science in nutrition from a certified college, followed by an internship. Much of the material covered in an RD program is very consistent with the government agencies concerned with public health and food regulations. Consequently, most dietitians tend to lean more toward the Western medicine view. An RD can expand their credentials as a Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CNN), which is much more holistic/integrative, or do continuing education in the integrative field.
How Holistic Nutrition is Different
A student of holistic nutrition is most likely to receive their education from a vocational school. Although these schools are typically licensed, they are often not accredited as a means of opening up the curriculum of study. Students study a wide variety of dietary theories in addition to the same material in anatomy and physiology that a dietician candidate would study.
Not all states allow practitioners to call themselves nutritionists without a formal college degree. Practitioners in these states must advertise themselves as a health coach or something similar. Colorado is one of the few states that permits nutritionists to practice as such, and it may just be a coincidence that Colorado also has the lowest rate of obesity in the US!
As with any credentialed or licensed professional, you have to find a practitioner who works well with you. If you would like to work with a Master Holistic Nutritionist, give me a call today 303-955-8049!
